Here comes the Sun (Oh Wait, Here Comes the Shade, Too)

A spot that receives both Sun and Shade can be one of the most challenging parts of your landscape to garden in, but it's not impossible!  All it takes is a little planning and the right plants......First off, think about WHEN your plants will be in sun or shade.  Is it afternoon or morning?  Maybe it's only in the Winter, or maybe it's all Summer? Another important factor is WHERE you live.  A shady spot in Oxnard can be cooler than a shady spot in Ojai, and Full Sun in Simi is usually hotter than Full Sun in Ventura. Also important is HOW MUCH WATER the area receives - once a week, once a month or once a lunar eclipse?

Once you have the basics covered, check out our HUGE list of plants that do well in these situations (available at our front counter).  Or, if we don't look like we are in the mood to talk, all of the plants on this table are dependable enough to use in most Sunny/Shady spots.  For those of you looking to take your garden to the next level, we occasionally offer workshops on gardening in shady locations and design classes that can help you make your sun-shade garden look better than a clean driving record.  Ask us about both!  Plant Native, Enjoy the Shady Life!
