Using California Native Plants for Medicine & Food

Nopalito is proud to present yet another lecture you won’t find at any other retail nursery! Join us as we welcome author and respected anthropologist and ethnobiologist Jan Timbrook from the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Jan will discuss some of the local plants of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and their traditional and modern medicinal uses.

Nopalito co-owner Antonio Sanchez follows Jan’s lecture with a discussion of various edible native plants and how to grow them, complete with samples of seasonal native plant dishes and beverages for late Summer!

Jan Timbrook is author of the excellent book Chumash Ethnobotany: Native Uses of Plants in the Santa Barbara Region. She has been working in the anthropology department at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for over 30 years, where she specializes in the indigenous Chumash people of the Santa Barbara region, particularly their uses of plants in food, medicine, and basketry.
